Luca Ghiotto: new F2 the road to F1

Luca Ghiotto believes the new Formula 2 spec car is now a much better road to Formula 1, having tested the F2/18 package at Magny Cours – setting the quickest time in the Campos team machine.

Following seven years of use in GP2 and F2, the GP2/11 has been replaced by the F2/18, which features revised aerodynamics, a 3.4-litre V6 turbo engine and the halo head protection device.

All 10 teams, along with 16 drivers, took part in the official F2 Magny Cours test which, after a cold and damp start, dried enough for slicks to be used in the afternoon.

“The turbo engine is getting us a step closer to F1,” said the Italian driver. “I drove the Williams F1 car last year and I can already say that the F2 2018 car is much closer to an F1 car than last year’s machine. If any of us had a chance to drive in F1, we would be able to adapt even faster.”

The opening round of the F2 season is a support race to the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix (7-8 April).
