Matt scores maiden BRC victory

Many congratulations to Matt Edwards on winning his first Prestone MSA British Rally Championship event, the Pirelli International Rally, in his Swift Rally Team Ford Fiesta R5.

Co-driven by Darren Garrod, the 33-year old Welshman, who wears a P1 Advanced Racewear suit and Stilo WRC DES 8860 helmet both supplied by Nicky Grist Motorsports, won the opening round of the series in Kielder forest by 20.5 seconds.

Rhys Yates/Elliott Edmondson finished second in their Skoda Fabia R5, just 1.3 seconds ahead of reigning British champions Keith Cronin/Mikie Galvin in their new Hyundai i20 R5.

Marty McCormack/David Moynihan were second after the opening stage, but gearbox gremlins with their Skoda Fabia R5 saw them nurse the car to a fourth place finish, just ahead of Jonny Greer/Kirsty Riddick in their new Ford Fiesta R5. Alex Laffey/Patrick Walsh completed the top six in their Fiesta R5.

David Bogie/John Rowan fell foul of one of Kielder’s unforgiving ditches, rolling their Skoda Fabia R5 on the opening stage.

“It’s been a long time coming and I cannot thank everyone at Swift and M-Sport who helped get us to this position,” said Edwards. “I knew we wouldn’t be far away this weekend. The car felt good, I was relaxed, and it did everything I needed it to do. This result sets us up nicely for the rest of the year but we aren’t going to get too carried way as it’s early days in the championship, but I am quite happy to go away with my first international win –it’s a feeling nobody can take away from me.”
